Lewis Hamilton will face a tough task to hold onto his slender championship lead with second-placed Sebastian Vettel starting on pole.
The Brit starts in fifth after Mercedes struggled at the Marina Bay circuit during qualifying, with two Ferraris and two Red Bulls, both of whom dominated on Saturday, ahead of him.
Vettel is joined by 19-year-old Max Verstappen on the front row, with the Dutchman’s Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in third ahead of Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton and his fellow Mercedes Valtteri Bottas make up the third row with a lot of ground to catch up in Sunday’s race — after all, the polesitter has won seven of the last nine races in Singapore.
